Science-Based Benchmark Database

Introduction

To evaluate whether companies and industry associations support robust climate policy, LobbyMap uses science-based policy benchmarks derived from the research of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Strong alignment between these benchmarks and an entity's policy positions reflects robust support for science-aligned climate policies.

The IPCC offers regular assessments on climate change, which InfluenceMap transforms into benchmarks for evaluating company statements. These are used alongside our regionally-specific government policy benchmarks to measure whether companies are supporting or impeding climate policy progress globally. For more information on our benchmarks, see the LobbyMap methodology.

The science-based policy benchmarks, which can be explored via the icons below, currently fall into two categories:

  • Technology-focused benchmarks overview the IPCC's analysis of the likely role of a range of different technologies that may (or may not) be needed for transitioning the economy in line with 1.5°C consistent pathways.

  • Sector-focused benchmarks summarize the IPCC's analysis on the timelines and technologies required to transition key climate-relevant sectors in line with 1.5°C consistent pathways.

InfluenceMap recognizes the Paris Agreement’s provisions for "Common But Differentiated Responsibilities" and has adapted certain benchmarks accordingly, referencing Chapter 5 of the IPCCs 2018 Special Report, "Sustainable Development, Poverty Eradication and Reducing Inequalities." These adapted benchmarks are applied to policy engagement in countries outside the Top 100 based on GDP per capita (World Bank).

More information on these benchmarks, as well as additional benchmarks in use by the LobbyMap platform, will be added to this page in due course.
