Climate Policy Engagement Analysis
Climate Policy Engagement Overview: Nigerian Gas Association (NGA) has very limited top-line messaging on climate change, and appears to advocate a long-term role for fossil gas in the energy mix.
Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: NGA appears to have very limited top-line communications on climate change. At the 2023 annual conference of the Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria (NAEC) in October 2023, the president of NGA, Akachukwu Nwokedi, gave no clear position on the IPCC demanded response to climate change. In July 2020, the previous president, Audrey Joe-Ezigbo, was reported supportive of eliminating gas flaring in the Nigerian Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).
Engagement with Climate-Related Regulations: NGA does not appear to have publicly engaged on climate-related policy in 2022-2023. The most recent example of engagement found by InfluenceMap was in July 2020, when the previous president of NGA, Audrey Joe-Ezigbo, supported eliminating gas flaring in the Nigerian PIB.
Positioning on Energy Transition: NGA appears to advocate a long-term role for fossil gas in the energy mix. For example, the association president, Akachukwu Nwokedi, advocated for new investment and subsidies for fossil fuels and advocated against taxes on fossil fuels in a training programme in October 2023.
