Climate Policy Engagement Analysis
Climate Policy Engagement Overview: Korea Gas Union appears to have limited engagement with climate policy, and weak disclosure of its climate policy positioning and engagement activities. Korea Gas Union expressed negative top-line messaging on climate science, often mispresenting the global warming potential of fossil fuel emissions while supporting the continued role of fossil gas in the energy mix.
Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: Korea Gas Union expresses negative top-line messaging on climate science. In its ‘Intro to natural gas’ section on the Korea Gas Union’s website accessed in July 2024, Korea Gas Union mispresented the global warming potential of fossil fuel emissions, stating that fossil gas is a ‘pollution-free clean fuel’.
Engagement with Climate-Related Regulations: InfluenceMap found limited evidence of Korea Gas Union’s positions on, or engagement with, climate-related regulations in Korea. In an April 2024 Congratulatory remarks in Gas News, the Secretary General of Korea Gas Union stated the need to establish “accurate carbon emission measurement standards”, but the statement takes no clear position on what those standards should be.
Positioning on Energy Transition: Korea Gas Union appears to take a negative position on the transition of the energy mix. According to an October 2024 article published by TodayEnergy, at the ‘2024 KGU Energy Conference’, Choi Yeon-hye, Chairman of the Korea Gas Union, suggested that the long-term role for fossil gas in the energy mix is desirable for the energy security without placing clear conditions on the deployment of CCS or methane abatement measures. In its ‘Use of natural gas’ section on the Korea Gas Union’s website accessed in July 2024, Korea Gas Union supported a continued role of fossil gas as an automobile fuel, unaccompanied by timelines that are aligned with IPCC guidelines. In addition, in a May 2024 Congratulatory remarks in Energy Daily, the Secretary General of Korea Gas Union appeared to oppose the reduction of fossil gas in the energy mix, stating fossil gas as a ‘core energy source of the future’.
