Climate Policy Engagement Analysis
Climate Policy Engagement Overview: InfluenceMap found very limited evidence of direct engagement by the Alliance to End Plastic Waste on climate-related policy. The Alliance seems supportive of policies to scale up recycling of plastic waste but it has not clearly supported policy measures in line with the waste hierarchy to tackle the entire lifecycle of plastics.
Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: The Alliance to End Plastic Waste has communicated broad support for circular economy policy in its top-line messaging. The Alliance supported robust policies as a key enabler to achieve a circular economy in a report published in March 2024. InfluenceMap did not detect public positions on IPCC-aligned emissions reductions, or the UN Paris Agreement in 2022-24.
Engagement with Circular Economy-Related Climate Regulations: The Alliance to End Plastic Waste seems to have limited engagement with circular economy-related climate policies. The Alliance appeared to advocate for the UN Global Plastics Treaty to prioritize measures to improve waste management and increase recycling rates, over actions to reduce and reuse plastic in a November 2022 press release. In a December 2023 press release President and CEO Jacob Duer advocated for the Treaty to prioritize measures to improve waste collection, sorting and recycling without clearly aligning with the waste hierarchy recommendations to prioritize reuse and reducing plastic use overall. In a December 2023 Report, the Alliance seemed to support waste management policies such as Extended Producer Responsibility and Deposit Return Scheme, as well as volume reduction targets for virgin plastics, however it emphasized negative impacts of packaging reusability targets and plastic taxation measures.
Positioning on Energy Transition: InfluenceMap has not detected evidence of engagement with energy transition-related policies.
