Climate Policy Engagement Analysis
Climate Lobbying Overview: Magna International exhibits limited policy engagement that is broadly misaligned with policy pathways for delivering the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement 2023-25. The company engaged with GHG emissions standards in the US and Canada, and is a member of three industry associations with negative engagement on climate change policies.
Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: Magna supported GHG emissions in line with a 1.5°C target in its 2024 Sustainability report, released in March 2025. While Magna used the Paris Agreement as a benchmark for its own emissions reduction targets in an August 2023 press release, the company does not appear to have advocated in support of the climate deal.
Engagement with Climate-Related Regulations: Magna’s 2024 Sustainability Report did not take a clear position on emissions trading regulations in the EU or Canada, or a clear position on GHG emissions standards in the EU, China, and US. The company indicated in its 2024 CDP Climate Change Questionnaire response that it regularly engaged with GHG emissions standards and Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards in the US, but its position on these policies is unclear.
Positioning on Energy Transition: Magna took an unclear position on the decarbonization of road transport in a blog post on its website, published July 2025, and didn’t take a clear position on internal combustion engine (ICE) phase-out policies in its 2024 sustainability report, released March 2025. Magna appeared to engage with policies related to sustainable mobility in a September 2024 Ontario lobbying disclosure. Magna’s July 2025 Canadian Federal lobbying disclosure indicated engagement with Canada’s strategic innovation fund. CEO
Industry Association Governance: Magna has not published a list of its industry association memberships or an account of its alignment with its industry associations. Magna International is a member of seven industry associations engaged on climate policy, including the Business Council of Canada, European Association of Automotive Suppliers, German Association of the Automotive Industry, and the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, which have both positive and negative engagement with climate policy. It is also a member of the US Chamber of Commerce, which is negatively engaged on climate policy.
