Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: InfluenceMap found limited evidence of top-line messaging on climate policy by Hyundai Steel in recent years. In its 2025 Sustainability report published in June 2025, Hyundai Steel appeared to support the need for drastic action to keep the global average temperature increase within 1.5°C as stated in the IPCC.
Engagement with Climate-Related Regulations: InfluenceMap found limited evidence of Hyundai Steel’s engagement with climate-related regulations in 2024-2025. According to the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE)’s August 2024 Policy Briefing, Hyundai Steel participated in the Steel and Aluminum Carbon Neutrality Policy Council and discussed the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (EU CBAM), but the company’s position on the policy was unclear. In a June 2024 Financial News article, Hyundai Steel CEO Seo Kang-hyun appeared to advocate for maintaining the current free allowances provision level of the Korea Emissions Trading Scheme (K-ETS).
Positioning on Energy Transition: Hyundai Steel supports the decarbonization of the steel industry, but is occasionally unclear whether this is in line with IPCC recommendations. In its 2025 Sustainability Report, Hyundai Steel supported the reduction of GHG emissions in steel production through the increased use of steel scrap in electric arc furnaces. In the ‘Carbon neutrality’ section of Hyundai Steel’s website, accessed in June 2025, Hyundai Steel broadly supported an increase in green hydrogen to decarbonize the steel industry. However, in an August 2024 Green Economy news article, Hyundai Steel emphasized economic and market feasibility of decarbonizing steel industry without government funding, but did not take a clear position on policy solutions.
Industry Association Governance: Hyundai Steel has disclosed a list of its industry association memberships in its 2025 Sustainability Report, but it excludes its membership to Korea International Trade Association (KITA). Hyundai Steel does not appear to have disclosed an account of its industry associations' positions and engagement activities, and has not published a review of its industry association memberships and climate policy engagement.
