Climate Policy Engagement Analysis
Climate Lobbying Overview: Bunge appears to exhibit limited engagement on climate change policy across the 2022-2025 time period. On policy related to land use, the company calls for the use of biofuels over renewables, while simultaneously expressing a preference for market forces over regulation.
Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: Bunge has limited but broadly positive top-line messaging on climate change policy. For example, in its 2024 Global Sustainability Report published in April 2024, Bunge supported mitigating climate change through land-use techniques, and in its 2023 Global Sustainability Reportreleased June 2023, it acknowledged the link between climate change and diets. In its 2024 Global Sustainability Report, the company stated support for climate change policies, however in its more recent Global Sustainability Report from May 2025, the company did not disclose a clear position on the need for government regulation to address climate change.
Engagement with Climate-Related Regulations: InfluenceMap found limited recent evidence of Bunge’s engagement with specific climate policies. The company references its own internal GHG emissions targets but did not disclose whether it supports legislative targets in its 2023 Global Sustainability Report. According to its Q3 2023 Federal Lobbying Disclosure the company engages on the Renewable Fuels Standard, but without a clear position.
Positioning on Land Use Policy: Bunge appears to have limited and unclear engagement on land-use related regulations. For example, in its 2025 Global Sustainability Report published in May 2025, Bunge disclosed a commitment to participate in conversations with governments to prevent deforestation, however its overall position and ambition on policy measures to prevent deforestation is unclear. Additionally, in the same report, it also supported making agricultural production more efficient, however without disclosing if it supported government regulation. This trend can also be identified in previous years: in its 2024 Global Sustainability Report from April 2024, the company advocated for efforts to find “scalable and realistic solutions” to climate challenges. Similarly, in its 2023 Global Sustainability Report, the company appears to support a transition in consumer diets to less GHG-intensive habits as well as improvements in its own agricultural operations, but did not appear to comment on the need for policy toward this aim.
Positioning on Energy Transition: InfluenceMap found limited recent evidence of Bunge’s position on the energy transition, with instances of recent negative engagement. For example, the company submitted March 2025 comments to the US Department of Agriculture concerning the Technical Guidelines for Climate-Smart Agriculture Crops Used as Biofuel Feedstocks, in which it advocated for the agency to prioritize biofuel development over renewables. Moreover, in its 2025 Global Sustainability Report from May 2025, the company supported an increased role for biofuels in the energy mix without, however, mention its limitations and uncertainties. Additionally, in the same report it also pushes for crop-based sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), without acknowledging limitations to GHG emissions savings.
Industry Association Governance: Bunge discloses its memberships to industry associations on its corporate website, accessed in July 2025, although the disclosure lacks detail on the associations’ climate policy positions and the company’s activity within each group. Bunge does not appear to have published a full audit of its alignment with its industry associations. Bunge remains a member of industry associations that are demonstrating increasingly obstructive positions, including the Brazilian Association of Food Industries (ABIA) and Personal Care Products Council (PCPC).
