Climate Policy Engagement Analysis
Climate Policy Engagement Overview: The Korea Electronics Association (KEA) appears to have very limited engagement with climate policy, and weak disclosure of its climate policy positioning and engagement activities. KEA supports policies to improve circular product design across the electronics industry and energy efficiency policies to achieve efficient energy consumption.
Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: InfluenceMap did not find evidence of clear top-line messaging on climate policy by KEA between 2023-2024. Previously, as reported by Electric Times in January 2022, the Vice President of KEA, Park Chung-won, has not specified support for regulatory measures for carbon neutrality, with expressing concern about its effect on Korean corporates’ ability to enter overseas markets.
Engagement with Climate-Related Regulations: InfluenceMap found limited evidence of KEA’s positions on, or engagement with, climate-related regulations in South Korea. In a Major business Tab on the KEA’s website accessed in April 2024, KEA stated its position on National greenhouse gas reduction goals and emissions trading system, but did not specify whether it supports the implementation of the regulation. On the other hand, in its September 2023 Issue Report, KEA supported policies to improve circular product design across the electronics industry. In an op-ed in Electronic Times in May 2023, the Vice President of KEA, Park Chung-won, supported energy efficiency policies, including incentives and financial support, to achieve energy consumption efficiency.
Positioning on Energy Transition: KEA appears to have limited engagement on energy transition in South Korea. In its October 2024 Issue Report, KEA supported the electrification of light-duty vehicles and called for government policy and support measures, stating the transition to electric vehicles is ‘not an option but a must’.
