Climate Policy Engagement Analysis
Climate Policy Engagement Overview: The Korea Battery Industry Association (KBIA) appeared to have limited engagement with climate policy and provided weak disclosure of its climate policy positioning and engagement activities. KBIA supported circular economy policies that promoted the reuse of electric vehicle (EV) batteries in South Korea.
Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: InfluenceMap did not find evidence of clear top-line messaging on climate policy by KBIA.
Engagement with Climate-Related Regulations: InfluenceMap found limited evidence of KBIA’s engagement with climate regulations. In a September 2024 KBIA press release and a July 2024 KBIA press release, KBIA supported circular economy policies aimed at promoting the reuse of EV batteries in South Korea. Similarly, in a February 2024 KBIA press release, Kim Dong-myeong, KBIA Chairman, stated that the association was “actively promoting policy support and deregulation, such as legislating post-use battery support laws and establishing an integrated management system,” expressing support for circular economy policies for reused batteries.
Positioning on Energy Transition: InfluenceMap found limited evidence of KBIA’s engagement on the transition to a low-carbon energy mix. In a January 2024 etoday news article, KBIA appeared to support the electrification of vehicles as a measure to address climate change. In a November 2023 E-daily article, the KBIA Vice President supported the electrification of transportation, stating that such a transition was an “undeniable trend to respond to climate change and move toward a net-zero era.”
