Climate Policy Engagement Overview: Japan Food Industry Association (JFIA) appears to have limited direct engagement with climate and energy policy in Japan.
Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: JFIA appears to have limited top-line messaging on climate policy, largely focusing on the sustainability of the food system and appearing to not specify positions on the need for climate regulation or a climate change response in line with the IPCC. In a notice on its website in March 2022, JFIA stated that with the “urgency of addressing global environmental issues such as climate change,” “adapting to the transition to a sustainable food system has become imperative for the food business.” In a policy request submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) in August 2022, JFIA requested “concrete measures to realize the KPIs for the food industry” in the Green Food System Strategy established by MAFF, but did not appear to specify a position on other forms of climate regulation or government intervention.
Engagement with Climate-Related Regulations: JFIA has stated that it is engaging with policymakers on the Green Food System Strategy and the Law Concerning the Promotion of Recycling of Plastic Resources in its business plan, accessed on its website in September 2022, but has not appeared to disclose its positions towards, or engagement with, other climate-related regulations.
