Climate Policy Engagement Analysis
Climate Lobbying Overview: The Indian Chemical Council (ICC) appears to have limited public engagement with climate policy in India between 2021-24. The association appears broadly positive in its top-line climate messaging, supporting emissions reductions in line with IPCC recommendations and India’s 2070 net-zero target.
Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: The Indian Chemical Council (ICC) engaged broadly positively in its top-line messaging on climate policy. A November 2023 Sustainability Conclave Position Paper appeared to support India’s 2070 net-zero target. In the same position paper, the association appeared to support government action on climate change, stating that “policies and regulations play a crucial role in shaping the direction of the chemical sector's sustainability efforts”. The President of the Indian Chemical Council, Ravi Goenka, appeared to support the outcome and efforts of COP26 and India’s Nationally Determined Contributions and 2070 net-zero target in a December 2021 position paper.
Engagement with Climate-Related Regulations: The Indian Chemical Council (ICC) has limited, yet positive, public engagement with climate-related regulations. It appears to support several Indian policies and regulations, for example in a November 2023 Sustainability Conclave position paper, ICC supported National Action Plan for Climate Change, India Cooling Action Plan, and Indian Carbon Market Exchange.
Positioning on Energy Transition: The Indian Chemical Council (ICC) has limited, yet positive public engagement with policy related to the energy transition. The association appears to be in favor of transition to a low-carbon economy, for example, in a November 2023 Sustainability Conclave position paper, it advocated to decarbonize the Indian chemical industry, one of the largest consumers of energy in the country.
InfluenceMap collects and assesses evidence of corporate climate policy engagement on a weekly basis, depending on the availability of information from each specific data source (for more information see our methodology). While this analysis flows through to the industry association’s scores each week, the summary above is updated periodically.
Additional Note: The Indian Chemical Council is headquartered in India, where InfluenceMap’s LobbyMap platform can currently only make a provisional assessment of corporate climate policy engagement, due to limited capability to access publicly available data on this issue. As it is possible that InfluenceMap is not yet able to fully capture evidence of the Indian Chemical Council climate policy engagement activities, these scores should be considered provisional at this time.
