Climate Policy Engagement Analysis
Climate Policy Engagement Overview: Automobile Business Association of Japan (ABAJ) appears to have very limited engagement with climate related policies. It appears to have broadly supported GX (Green Transformation) and carbon neutrality by 2050. Although previously it has opposed taxes on gasoline and diesel, more recently it has supported a tax reduction for eco-friendly cars.
Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: ABAJ appears to have limited top-line messaging on climate change. ABAJ’s chair, Uchiyamada, on an Automotive Chamber News published by ABAJ in April 2023, appeared to emphasize “Achieving Carbon Neutral Goal”, while promoting discussion with relevant entities within and outside the industry. InfluenceMap could not find any recent evidence of ABAJ’s position on the Paris Agreement and the need for climate regulations.
Engagement with Climate-Related Regulations: ABAJ appears to have very limited but positive engagement with climate-related regulations. Within an article of an Automotive Chamber News published in July 2023, the chair, Uchiyamada, calls for tax reductions for eco-friendly cars and a drastic review of the automobile tax system to achieve carbon neutrality.
Positioning on Energy Transition: ABAJ appears to be very limited and negative in its engagement with climate-related regulations in Japan. In the Request for Tax Reform for FY2021 submitted to the government in October 2020, ABAJ opposed gasoline and diesel fuel tax, arguing that it is an unreasonable burden on customers, and thus should be eliminated.
