Climate Policy Engagement Analysis

Climate Policy Engagement Overview: MEG Energy exhibits active policy engagement that is broadly misaligned with policy pathways for the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting temperature rise to below 1.5 C. The company advocates to weaken climate regulations in Canada and promotes a prolonged role for fossil fuels in the energy mix.

Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: MEG Energy demonstrates limited communications on top-level climate action. InfluenceMap could not find any recent evidence of the company’s positions on the goals of the Paris Agreement and a 2050 net-zero target. While the company advocates for increased government-led investment and incentives to achieve net-zero emissions, per its Federal Lobbyist Registry filing in July 2025, it is unclear if it supports the needs for other forms of regulation and government intervention.

Engagement with Climate-Related Regulations: MEG Energy engages negatively on specific climate-related regulations in Canada. The company called for the repeal of Canada’s Oil and Gas Emissions Cap in joint letters to policymakers in March 2025 and April 2025. In the same March and April 2025 letters, MEG Energy called for the repeal of Canada's industrial emissions trading system, the Output-Based Pricing System. The company opposed federal methane regulations for the oil and gas sector in February 2024 comments to the government, stating that regulations are "excessively prescriptive" and would "burden" oil sands facilities. It also opposed the venting and flaring requirements set in the regulations.

Positioning on Energy Transition: MEG Energy appears unsupportive of an energy transition in line with IPCC recommendations and advocates for a long-term role for fossil fuels in the energy mix. In March 2025, MEG Energy sent a letter to party leaders advocating to increase production and investment in Canada’s oil and gas sector. The company signed a second updated letter in April 2025 that reiterated these asks. In July 2025, MEG Energy also disclosed advocacy for policy measures to attract investment into the oil sands sector in both its Alberta Lobbyist Registry and Federal Lobbyist Registry filings.

MEG Energy’s support for the energy transition appears to be predicated on government support for technology-led solutions for decarbonization, mainly carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS). The company disclosed advocacy for policy levers to support the development of CCUS in its Federal Lobbyist Registry filing in July 2025. However, it has not clarified the intended uses of CCUS and how the technology can support energy sector decarbonization.

Industry Association Governance: MEG Energy discloses its membership to the Pathways Alliance on its website, without further details on its membership role within the organization or the associations’ climate policy positions and engagement activities. The Pathways Alliance advocates for an ongoing role for oil in Canada and opposes key climate regulations.

InfluenceMap collects and assesses evidence of corporate climate policy engagement on a weekly basis, depending on the availability of information from each specific data source (for more information, see our methodology). While this analysis flows through to the company’s scores each week, the summary above is updated periodically. This summary was last updated in Q3 2025.
