Climate Policy Engagement Analysis

Climate Policy Engagement Overview: CVS Health (CVS) appears to have very limited engagement with climate change policy, stating in its 2020 CDP response that it is not engaged on climate-related policy. However, CVS appears supportive of climate action in its top-line communications.

Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: CVS appears to accept some of the science of climate change on its corporate website, accessed in February 2022. In 2021, on its TCFD webpage, the company also acknowledged the causal link between climate change and extreme weather phenomena. In its 2020 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report, published in March 2021, CVS Health also appeared to support the need to limit global warming to 1.5°C. However, in its 2020 CSR report, the company does not appear to explicitly support the Paris Agreement. CVS also does not appear to explicitly support the need for climate change regulation, stating in its 2020 CSR report that some climate-related policy may be relevant to the company, without stating a clear position. CVS reported engagement on parts of the Build Back Better Act in its Q3 and Q4 2021 federal lobbying disclosure, but did not report engagement on the climate provisions in the bill.

Engagement with Climate-Related Regulations: CVS does not appear to disclose its climate-related policy positions and lobbying activities on its corporate website. In its 2020 CDP response, CVS Health stated that it does not “pursue activities that have the potential to directly influence climate change policy.” InfluenceMap was unable to find any recent evidence of engagement with specific climate-related policies.

Industry Association Governance: CVS discloses its memberships to US industry associations on its corporate website. However, it does not disclose any further details on its role within each association or their climate policy positions. CVS Health has not published a review of its industry associations to date.
