Climate Policy Engagement Analysis
Climate Policy Engagement Overview: Martin Marietta Materials (Martin Marietta) exhibited very limited engagement with climate change policy in 2023-25, taking positions that are broadly misaligned with policy pathways for delivering the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement. The company retains board membership of two industry associations which are actively engaged on US climate policy.
Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: Martin Marietta appears to have limited top-line communications on climate change policy. InfluenceMap has not detected recent positions on the need for climate regulation, the UN Paris Agreement, nor long-term emissions reductions. The company acknowledged the link between climate change and negative impacts such as sea level changes and unexpected weather conditions in its 2023 Sustainability Report, published in April 2024.
Engagement with Climate-Related Policies: Martin Marietta stated on its corporate website, accessed in July 2025, that it does not engage on climate-related policies. This is aligned with InfluenceMap’s assessment of the company.
Positioning on Energy Transition: Martin Marietta appears to have limited engagement relating to the transition of the energy mix, taking broadly mixed or unclear positions. In its 2023 Sustainability Report, published in April 2024, the company broadly supported the use of carbon capture and storage to decarbonize industry, including through support for related provisions in the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, however without clearly aligning its position with IPCC guidance on the matter. It also supported the use of alternative fuels in the same report, without mentioning the need to phase out fossil fuels in the cement production process, nor stating the need for emissions mitigation technologies. In its Sustainability Report, published in April 2025, Martin Marietta promoted cement recarbonation as an effective carbon sequestration measure without stating the limited contribution of this process to emissions reductions. However, it also supported clinker substitution to decarbonize the cement production process, by advocating for acceptance of lower clinker content cements in US regulations.
Industry Association Governance: Martin Marietta disclosed a complete list of its membership to industry associations on its corporate website, accessed in July 2025, describing the associations’ top-line positions and how it is attempting to influence them. However, it did not disclose the engagement activities of the associations, nor has it published a review of alignment with associations. The company holds influential positions in two US groups that engage actively on climate policy, the Portland Cement Association and the US Chamber of Commerce, which engages on climate policy with predominantly negative positions.
InfluenceMap collects and assesses evidence of corporate climate policy engagement on a weekly basis, depending on the availability of information from each specific data source (for more information see our methodology). While this analysis flows through to the company’s scores each week, the summary above is updated periodically. This summary was last updated in Q3 2025.
