Climate Lobbying Overview: HP Inc (HP) appears to hold a positive stance toward policy action on climate change in the US, albeit with limited engagement. In general, HP's positive support for climate policy is evident in public sign-on letters rather than detailed engagement with specific policies.

Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: HP has highly positive top-line communications on climate policy. For example, in September 2021, HP Inc signed a joint letter with the We Mean Business Coalition supporting GHG emissions reductions in line with 1.5°C target. In July 2020, HP Inc CEO signed a joint letter urging governments globally to align COVID-19 recovery packages with efforts to achieve a 1.5C target. Between 2016 and 2020, the company signed on to a number of letters supporting the Paris Agreement, including the 2016 Business Backs Low-Carbon USA initiative, the We Are Still in initiative launched in 2017, and the United for the Paris Agreement letter opposing US withdrawal from the Agreement in December 2019.

Engagement with Climate-Related Policy: HP appears to engage on a limited basis with specific climate policies, though with clearly positive positions. As reported by Politico in July 2021, HP signed a joint letter supporting a Federal Clean Energy Standard to achieve 100% clean energy by 2035. In April 2021, HP signed a joint letter with the We Mean Business coalition calling on US President Biden to adopt a target of cutting GHG emissions by at least 50% below 2005 levels by 2030.

Positioning on Energy Transition: InfluenceMap found limited evidence of HP Inc’s engagement with policy related to the energy mix and the energy transition. Joint letters in December 2020 and April 2021 call on UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and US President Joe Biden, respectively, to set out Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Agreement that set both countries on a path to net-zero emissions by 2050. HP also participated in CERES’ LEAD on climate initiative in May 2021 calling on US policymakers to ensure that federal infrastructure negotiations consider investments in infrastructure that prioritize emissions reductions.

Industry Association Governance: HP is a member of the US Business Roundtable, which demonstrates mixed positions on climate policy, and Japanese industry association Keidanren, which appears to play a key role obstructing climate policy in Japan. It is also a member of the Confederation of British Industry, which engages actively on UK climate policy with increasingly positive positions.

How to Read our Relationship Score Map

In this section, we depict graphically the relationships the corporation has with trade associations, federations, advocacy groups and other third parties who may be acting on their behalf to influence climate change policy. Each of the columns above represents one relationship the corporation appears to have with such a third party. In these columns, the top, dark section represents the strength of the relationship the corporation has with the influencer. For example if a corporation's senior executive also held a key role in the trade association, we would deem this to be a strong relationship and it would be on the far left of the chart above, with the weaker ones to the right. Click on these grey shaded upper sections for details of these relationships. The middle section contains a link to the organization score details of the influencer concerned, so you can see the details of its climate change policy influence. Click on the middle sections for for details of the trade associations.
